TRAGEDY IN KWARA AS 19 CHILDREN DROWNS IN BOAT MISHAP
Tragedy struck in Lafiagi ,Edu Local Government area in Kwara state as 19 children have been reportedly drowned in a boat mishap.
The boat conveying 22people mostly children across River Niger for a traditional wedding ceremony in a community in Niger capsized across the river.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria NAN, two victims survived while 19 others died. Some of the corpses have been recovered from the river while efforts is ongoing to recover others.
The Secretary of Lafiagi Traditional Council however confirmed the incident “Definitely they are up to 12.The figure is between 12 and that 19 that you said”
The Public Relations Officer of the Kwara State Police Command,DSP ,Ajayi Okasanmi also confirmed the incident .He said the officers of the force and other security agencies had joined the Local Government council to recover the corpses.
Meanwhile, the Kwara State Governor ,Dr Abdul Fatah Ahmed has commiserated with the Emir of Lafiagi Alhaji Saadu Kawu Haliru over the death.The Governor in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary ,AbdulWahab Oba described the demise of the victims as unfortunate and a great loss to their Emirate and the state at large .
“I deeply sympathize with the Emir ,the good people of Lafiagi and the family of the victims. “He prayed God to grant the deceased eternal rest and give the families and the entire Lafiagi Emirate the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
